CHAPTER 12
"NO! IT CAN'T be!" wailed Min, burrowing into my chest as we halted.
"I can't believe it's another body. I was sure the killing was a one-off." I stroked Min's head through her hat but it was small comfort, I knew. Cautiously, I edged forward once she'd recovered from the shock a little, and approached the body in the lane, literally a minute or two away from the campsite.
A thick blanket covered the corpse, but it was still obvious it was a body and not just a pile of junk. For a start, legs stuck out, and the shape was unmistakable.
Min reached out and grabbed my hand then yanked me back. "Max, don't get any closer. The killer might be watching and ready to pounce." She glanced around, full of fear, but the track was clear and the hedges too dense and high for anyone to be lurking, ready to ambush.
"There's nobody here. We're safe. At least for now. Wait here. I need to take a look."
"Just be careful, and I'm coming too."
Anxious looked at me then Min, before trotting over, tail up, ears primed, then wagged as he approached.
"That's weird. Normally, he's good at picking up on the vibe. He should be growling with his tail down," I noted, perplexed by his actions. When he began sniffing at the body then licking the blanket, I was utterly confounded.
"He isn't scared at all. Anxious, come here." Min patted her thighs and Anxious turned, head cocked, confused by her call. He scurried over then sat, waiting for us to tell him it was okay to merrily sniff a corpse.
"What is it, boy? Do you know the person?" I asked.
Anxious woofed in the affirmative, then turned and scampered back over and pawed at the blanket.
"I guess we need to take a look," I sighed, wishing we could go home and begin cooking.
As a team, we inched forward, two of us wary, one of us enjoying the game. We stood over the body, then just to get it over with I bent and whipped off the blanket and jumped back, although I wasn't sure why. The dead couldn't hurt me, but I was jittery and worried about what I might see.
Min shrieked, "It's Clarence!" and gripped my arm.
"Someone's murdered the DI!" I gasped, not quite believing it.
Anxious barked, the tone not what I'd expected, almost happy, then he cast a disapproving glance our way before licking Clarence's bloody face.
Min gripped my arm tight and I almost jumped out of my skin as Clarence convulsed then shot upright and groaned as he rubbed at his temple where blood was oozing from a gash to his forehead.
"You're not dead," gushed Min, exhaling sharply.
"I hope not, although I feel like I should be." Clarence moved his hand in front of his face and inspected the blood, then shrugged before attempting to stand. He collapsed back down onto the soaking ground. "Went dizzy. Give me a moment. Can you help me up?"
"Is that wise? Shouldn't you rest?"
"I'm fine.
